The new center is expected to be up and running in late 2021 or 2022

Vodafone España representatives say that with regards to their upcoming R&D center in Malaga, company personnel are currently working to select the site and negotiate with universities so as to attract them to the center and have access to talent. In terms of employment, Vodafone plans to increase the initial 600 jobs and to establish this Vodafone center as a reference in 5G and Internet of Things (IoT), areas in which the company is a worldwide leader.

Vodafone recently presented new 5G applications for the aerospace industry in Andalusia, Spanish region also selected for the rollout of pilot tests for this new technology through the “Impulso 5G Andalucía” program, in which the Governments of both Andalusia and Spain participated. One of the projects within the framework of Impulso 5G Andalucía was Athos, which uses accuracy and speed of 5G to develop and validate an UAV (Unmanned Vehicle) prototype for optimizing symptom-based assessment of diseases/plagues and/or crop deficiencies. Another project aims to remotely control drones from a police headquarters in real time and with minimum latency. This would be based on the use of 5G to control drones from specialized centers.
